5 Favorite Things: App Edition

October 3, 2022
Hey, my name is Marissa and I am the wife and mom in this group. Some of my favorite things are Downton Abbey, black coffee, any Beth Moore study, and the color purple. I’ve currently been to 5 continents, and one place I’ll always travel back to is London, England.

In this 2nd of a 6 part series I, Marissa your host and totally inept APP user, will talk about my 5 favorite apps that help us a nomadic family. Now, please don’t mistake this episode as me trying to come off as a tech expert, because I am NOT! But, with these 5 apps we are able to do school, entertainment and family relations in a better way while we are moving around this globe.

HOOPLA: This app is connected to the public library you live near in the United States. So, make sure that you have a library card for each person you want to sign up for this. You can “check out” 8 books each month. Having free access to books, movies, and music is awesome! It’s been a great part of our schooling for the kids.

Disney +: Why this app? There are 2 main reasons: 1) National Geographic is amazing. We use this to watch educational shows, and see places that we will be traveling too. While in Europe we watched the “Europe from Above” series, while in Paris we watched “Notre-Dame Race Against the Inferno” to learn about the fire. Also, there are many fun ways to connect movies and travel. While on our trip in the Amazon Rainforest we downloaded and watched “Jungle Cruise”.  Reason 2) Travel days can be long! And the great thing about this app is you can download movies and shows on each person’s device. That means before we head to the airport for a 13 hour travel day, each of our kids can pick out the movies they want to watch.

GoodNotes: This app helps with everything in our lives. Even in the digital world it’s so easy for kids to get “messy”. This allows them to have a notebook for each of their subjects, but also they can use it to journal or draw or write stories or poems, whatever they want. You can also use it to plan your trips.

Marco Polo: We use this app DAILY to talk to our family. It’s so easy. You just send a video message to your group (a group can be 1 or 20 people, you pick who is in each group) and whenever they are ready they watch it and can respond. It’s great for those moments when you’re out and you see something cool and think “I wish my mom or dad or friend could see this!”. Just open the app, take a video and bam, they see it! This app has helped our family in America feel better about our traveling because they can actually see where we are, and what we are doing, and it’s helped us by allowing us to feel like our families are up to date with what’s happening in our lives.

WhatsApp: This probably isn’t a new one for you, but just in case you haven’t heard of it, I wanted to talk about it. The best thing (in my opinion) is the video calling. If you have someone you want to be able to call a lot, but don’t want to pay lots to do it, this can be a great option. I don’t use the social side of it, but it’s there if you want it.
